Chase Home Funds Programs in Support of Women Facing Eviction
The Chase Home partnered with Civil Justice, Community Legal Services and Arundel Community Development Services in support of the County Executive's Renter Eviction Avoidence Program (REAP). Since August 2021, the Chase Home has provided funding to prevent eviction of single women, many with families, who reside in Anne Arundel County.
Based on the success of the REAP program, the Chase Home Board of Trustees pledged additional funds in support of two programs that prevent eviction of women in Anne Arundel County. Established in late 2022, the Women's Rent Eviction Emergency Discretionary Fund allows for the immediate disbursement of funds to women facing imminent eviction by partnering with our Benevolence Coalition members who require additional funds to prevent homelessness. St. Anne's Grants Committee has provided grant funds in support of this program in both 2023 and 2024.
The second program named the Women's Eviction Prevention Program in partnership with Community Legal Services's (CLS) Anne Arundel County Eviction Prevention Legal Program allows Chase Home to refer families at risk of eviction due to loss of income to CLS with confidence that they will receive quality legal assistance to stabilize housing for those at high risk of eviction. CLS attorneys provide free legal aid and negotiates with landlords to protect the tenant and enable them to stay in their homes. Chase Home assists their clients by providing funding so that property owners are paid and tenants have an opportunity to get back on their feet. The outcome for those at risk is overwhelmingly positive and benefits not only the female tenants and their children, but also often benefits the landlords leading to negotiated settlement rather than eviction. In 2024, St. Margaret's Church approved grant funding in support of this program. The Chase Home's rent eviction prevention funding programs have made a positive impact on these women's lives, allowing them to keep their homes and get back on their feet.
Chase Home provided housing assistance to a total of 150 women and 212 children. Most of the women's financial hardships arise from recent job loss, loss of spouse, chronic illness, disability and the impact of the COVID-19 public health crisis, contributing to their housing insecurity.
Chase Home's emergency rent eviction prevention funding made a positive impact on these women's lives, allowing them to keep their homes.
